Things might not be what we are told by Daniel McAdams via Zero Hedge: Usually foreign analysts of the American political scene are either sycophantic or just annoying, but no one would dare say that about Aussie observer Caitlin Johnstone, whose punk rock style of cutting to the chase is as refreshing as it can be shocking (I am not a fan of the strong language, but I get it). Since President Trump’s “fire and fury” explosion yesterday Americans have to an unsettling degree once again rallied ’round...

On Marriage Equality, The Coalition Has Turned A Democratic Antidote Into A Poison

In forging ahead with a bad-faith postal vote on same-sex marriage, the government has damaged one of the few implements that could have been deployed against a crisis that runs deeper than the Coalition’s leadership or the definition of marriage, writes Max Chalmers. If there was ever any doubt about why the opponents of same-sex marriage wanted a plebiscite in the first place, it has been clarified this week. Once a delay tactic, the triumph of a non-compulsory postal vote run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics – assuming it overcomes legal challenges – opens a path for the minority of Australians who oppose marriage equality to veil their position with democratic legitimacy, despite...

Men From Poor Families Twice As Likely To Stay Single, British Think Tank Finds

Middle-aged men from disadvantaged backgrounds are twice as likely to be single as those from rich families, according to a new study that highlights the lack of social mobility in Britain, The Guardian reports. Research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows that men’s marriage prospects are linked to their upbringing, and that the disparity between those from well-off and poor families has widened in recent years. The study found that one in three men from disadvantaged backgrounds were single at the age of 42, compared with one in seven from rich backgrounds. The IFS said this was the result both of lower marriage rates and a higher likelihood of relationship breakdown among men from...

If you've spent much time traveling in Mexico or the southwestern United States, you may have seen folks enjoying an agua fresca on a hot day. Agua frescas are simply water blended with sugar, fresh fruit, seeds (like chia) or dried flowers to make a refreshing, non-alcoholic drink. Fruits like lime, pineapple and watermelon are all popular in agua frescas, but none is more recognizable than the jewel-toned water of the hibiscus flower. ......

Harvepino / shutterstock Each summer, a large part of the Gulf of Mexico “dies”. This year, the Gulf’s “dead zone” is the largest on record , stretching from the mouth of the Mississippi, along the coast of Louisiana to waters off Texas, hundreds of miles away. Around 8,776 square miles of ocean, an area the size of New Jersey or Wales, is almost lifeless. John Muir, the famed naturalist and early conservation campaigner, once said that: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the...

Black Women: Voting in Large Numbers Yet Underrepresented

By Susan Buchanan Louisiana Weekly/New America Media America’s black women vote at high rates and are politically active, but remain underrepresented in elected positions relative to their population size. And they’ll have to continue protecting their ability to cast ballots, according to “The Status of Black Women in the United States,” a report released in June. That’s because the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013 weakened the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The status report was co-authored by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research in Washington and the National Domestic Workers Alliance in New York. Black voter registration and turnout rose after 1965. Before that, black men were granted the...

Symmetrical and Complementary Relationships

In the 1960s, a team of theorists and psychologists at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California started to study communication in families in a new way. This team recognized that self-reinforcing and self-correcting feedback loops occur in many fields, including neurology, evolutionary biology and even mechanical and electrical systems. Such systems constantly adjust themselves. A good example is the thermostat in your house. When the thermostat registers that the temperature falls, the furnace kicks on until the house heats up. When the desired temperature is reached, the thermostat lets the furnace know it can shut off. And around and around it goes. They applied those...
